(The first was CV1 Langley.)Devotees of WW2 history should enjoy the book. It is not overly technical,naval jargon is kept to a minimum, so it is accessible to the average history buff. According to other reviewers, there are some errors in the book relating to naval armament and aircraft weapons, but if so, they take little away from the reader's enjoyment of a thrilling story of the skill and heroism of American Marines and Sailors in the early, bleak days of the war.Incidentally, Japanese combat skill and daring are acknowledged .I read the book in Kindle format. There are no maps that I recall, and some would have been helpful; there are photos at the end of the book, as well as an appendix of the the careers of some of the notable characters. Each chapter has footnotes, which appear at the end of the chapter.Now to the story: Lexington was one of four USN carriers in the Pacific after December 7th. It, and the other carriers, were vital to protecting the US and in carrying the war to Japan. Lexington and its planes, along with Saratoga, its sister carrier, took part in early combat with the Japanese fleet, earning some victories, but at the Battle of the Coral Sea, the two fleets met, or at least theiraircraft did as the USN, in conjunction with Australian allies, sought to interdict a Japanese fleet on its way to attack New Guinea,which Japan would use as a base to invade, or at least, attack AustraliaThe resulting battle in which the enemy ships never saw each other was a first. All the combat damage was dealt by aircraft.The Lexington and its men fought well and the ship was badly damaged. But even as the airmen fought heroically in the sky over the Japanese fleet, there was back on the ship heroism as the men of the Lexington fought to keep the stricken ship from sinking.It is quite a story.The early part of the book is of the early days of the ship and its commanders.It is useful in that it relates the growth, training and growing influence of carriers in naval thinking. It also describes the fatal flaws in the construction of this ship in particular, and in the aircraft tactics. The last section is of the career of the new Lexington, CV16 in the Pacific war.But the Coral Sea combat is the heart of the book and it beats strongly, filled with emotion and greatness.Recommended to WW2 amateur historians.I would have given it four stars if it included maps (if I am wrong about the absence of maps, I apologize, but I did not find them in the Kindle edition.)14 of 15 people found the following review helpful.Lady LexBy QuantumtorpedoThe book is written as if it comes from the ship's log. We are given a history of the beginnings of our great fleets that make port of calls through the world. We can honor one of the great ships in U.S. Naval history. The beginnings of Naval Avation was hard fought by a group of forward thinking men. They had to fight the "Big Gun" faction on a daily basis, in the end and through trial and tribulation, they designed the modern navy.The Lady Lex was beloved by her crew, a wall in the Pacific Ocean in the dark days early in the Pacific war. Lexington (CV 2) fought valiantly, her men brave against all odds. Her Captain was a great seaman and leader and her crew reflected that leadership. The men of today's aircraft carriers owe the men of Lexington a great deal. As do we all1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.The career of the US Navy's first fleet carrier.By Stone DogAuthor Phil Keith has given us a chronicle of the USS Lexington's career, from it's conversion from a battle cruiser to it's end in the Coral Sea. The author has given us a good look at the "Lady Lex" and her officers and crew during those early, dark days after Pearl Harbor when a few ships - the Lexington among them - held the line.The author begins with the battle cruiser hull that would be converted into the US Navy's first fleet carrier. As a result of the Washington Naval Conference in 1921-1922, two battle cruisers the US Navy was building would be converted into carriers - the USS Lexington and her sister, the USS Saratoga. Because they were not built from the ground-up as carriers, there would be many compromises in the ships' designs that would make them vulnerable when war came.Stay the Rising Sun gives the reader a good idea of the interwar navy and the experiments with carrier aviation in yearly maneuvers. The author frankly writes about the poor tactics and coordination in the carrier strike groups and the military history reader must wonder why the Japanese were able to create a carrier attack doctrine but the US Navy was not.The author writes eloquently about the officers and crew of the Lexington as they were part of the desperate defense after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. The Lexington and the other carriers were fortunate not to have been in Pearl when the Japanese attack had destroyed so many US Navy fighting ships.The story culminates in the Battle of the Coral Sea where the Lexington's air group would sink the first Japanese carrier of the war - the Shoho - and that immortal phrase "Scratch one flattop!" was uttered. The battle would continue the next day and the American ships Lexington and Yorktown would find themselves damaged. The "Lady Lex" would suffer secondary explosions from fuel vapors that escaped fractured aviation gas lines that would seal her fate. The Japanese suffered damage to their own fleet carrier IJN Shokaku and the air group of IJN Zuikaku would be decimated.The Lexington went down, but went down hard. The Japanese attempt to attack Port Moresby in New Guinea had been turned back. The sacrifice of the USS Lexington and many of her crew is well attested in this book as men desperately tried to save their fellow crewmen and their ship.
