I feel that his writing the book was indeed therapeutic for him and that is good. Mostly, I am happy that he found the meaning of true love in his having and raising a beautiful little girl after the war.Dislikes:I am terribly disappointed that even after he was put through a Living Hell in Vietnam and even after his seeing so many Veterans living in despair and with all sorts of mental problems after the war - - - and even after he raises the question of “is this the way the U.S. treats it’s Veterans” -- HE STILL MADE ABSOLUTELY NO RECOMMENDATION AS TO HOW THE FATALITIES AND TRAUMATIC EFFECTS OF WAR CAN BE PREVENTED!His failure to do that is a huge disappointment for me as a reader! Men and women and children have been dying in wars for thousands of years. For the greatest majority of wars for which histories have been documented - - the “After the Fact Question” - - has always been “Why”….. “ For What” - “Why did we cause so many to die”.In my heart I don’t think he condoned the war , yet his failure to address alternatives to the war or - - - specifically his failure to explore his own options for not allowing himself to enter the war in the first place … leads one to believe that by default he is perfectly in agreement with the status quo expectation of citizens to head the call of the Military of their country whenever and wherever that may be!So in a sense the book is just another of the many thousands of war stories. Rambo lives….and that’s OK. Yet I feel what we all need more of is tough people similar to Mr. Delphin but who can also buck the system of Social and Political condemnation by speaking out against wars…..by speaking out against having our children sent off many thousands of miles to rage war and killing upon others and themselves. The world will be a better place when young men and women learn to “think” with the brain which rests between their own ears…….rather than march off like mindless warrior ants at the first call of their countries political military machine! At first I did not think I would, but the book really did grow on me.I am also Creole and lived in Alexandria, La. as a little boy and experienced a lot of the same adventures as Walter did.Fortunately, I did not go to Vietnam, but two of my brothers did and they had a hard time adjusting back to civilian life.
