RobertsThe fall of Plataea is not one of the more salient phases for historians of the Peloponnesian war. The present book takes the reader on a "deep dive" into the goings-on of that time period expatiates how the citizens of Plataea were caught in a no-win situation, given that they were in the middle of two city state Superpowers (Sparta Athens) that were @ each other's throats.Thus is the backdrop where we meet Nikias: an 18 year old Plataean with a bloodline of noble warriors in his ancestry. His grandfather, Menesarkas, is an Olympic wrestler as well as a General on the battlefield. Unfortunately, Nikias comes of age at a less than ideal time: Sparta wants Plataea to break its alliance with Athens. Meanwhile, Athens forbids Plataea from breaking off but at the same time does nothing to protect her (quite vulnerable) ally. The story gives us a glimpse of what it must have been like to become warrior age during a time of such turmoil.People who have read The Peloponnesian War (Oxford World's Classics) will be familiar with the basic storyline. While Thucydides is not a pre-requisite for the present book, it is HIGHLY recommended. People who enjoy the present book may also like to delve into other phases of the war between Athens Sparta as depicted in Tides of War, Shades of Artemis: A Novel of Ancient Greece and the Spartan Brasidas and The Isle of Stone: A Novel of Ancient Sparta.The 1 glaring mistake in the present book is that it confuses Leonidas (who led the 300 in the Battle of Thermopylae) with Lysander, who was a Spartan General in the Peloponnesian war. No biggie, but just want to avoid anyone from being perplexed. All in all, a great read I'm moving on to book #2 in the series!!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.A New Voice In Historical FictionBy GlobalMooThis is probably one of the best historical fiction novels I've ever read. If you loved Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire, or the novels of Conn Iggulden or Bernard Cornwell (or even the movie Braveheart) this is the book and series for you. It's cinematic and exciting, but meticulously researched. Noble obviously lived in this place in his head. The main character, Nikias, is a complex and interesting protagonist. He's a fighter, but he's also a poet. He lives by a strict code of honor, but he's willing to do anything to stop the genocidal invaders from destroying his city and family. It's nonstop action...but not stupid action (if you know what I mean). And the trial scene at the end is just as thrilling as the battles. I can't wait for the second book in the series which I found out is called Spartans at the Gates. Also, there is a great female protagonist and a character that I don't think I've ever seen in a historical fiction novel set during this period: a half-African inventor/warrior named Chusor who is like an ancient Greek Vin Diesel. The author combines well fictitious characters with real historic figures and events including cultural issues and practices of those days. He develops the story at just the right pace.While I love to remember the heroic actions by the Spartans, it's undisputable that if they would have won over Athens, democracy would have been squashed too early and the world would be a more tyrannical place today.
