ReidI love this series, which was my happy introduction to Diana Rowland in total. (Her Kara Gillian series is a darker entry in the urban fantasy genre, but just as good.)This book continues developing the story of Angel, a highly sympathetic character from the wrong side of the tracks who is (like so many of us) looking to better her life and control her diet. In Angel's case, she tries to eat the right brains - which is to say, of the "no longer living" and most definitely not of the "friend and family" variety. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, I really recommend beginning at the start, as Rowland plays a long game, with broad cross-book story arcs that benefit from following along. You can expect a relatively light-hearted adventure story with some elements of horror (this is zombie fiction, after all), some elements of science fiction (there are mad scientists around), some elements of mystery (always a crime or conspiracy to be solved) and some elements of paranormal romance (even an undead girl wants to be loved). Those of you who have read the preceding White Trash Zombie novels can expect more of the same. In this episode, Angel has a major setback in the whole "bettering her life" thing as she learns that an addictive personality persists beyond the grave. Like many addicts in crisis-mode, she makes some stupid decisions and isn't quite at her best, but Rowland doesn't wallow. Important developments in zombie evolution will be revealed!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful."...a trickle of brain-tinged swamp water poured over the edge of his open skull to splatter onto my face..."By Mark Louis BaumgartAngel Crawford, our favorite li'l zombie spitfire is back, and she's still learning her craft at the coroner’s office in the St. Edward’s Parrish in Louisiana. As the day starts she's starting what's going to turn out to be a helluva crappy next couple of days for her. Angel is a zombie, but not your typical Romero type of zombie, because she was zombiefied in the first novel to keep from her from permanently dying after being kidnapped. Being turned into a zombie entails being infected with a parasite and to keep her from dying she has to consume human brains, and if she doesn't get her maintenance allotment she becomes a full-fledged shambler. As her working day starts, she's being called on the carpet by her boss Allan Prejean for reasons unknown, and which will remain unknown for the majority of the novel as his meeting with her, and her dressing down with Allan gets interrupted by a phone call, and Angel will get abruptly dismissed. This is something that will hang above her head throughout most of the novel and leaving her in suspension as to her fate with her boss and her job. Of course, things will continue to go downhill for her, as she notices later when she goes out for lunch later that Marcus, head of the local zombie tribe's security is, along with Rachael, Angel's arch-nemesis in the tribe, are having a meeting at the Scott Funeral Home. It is from them she learns that the FBI is sniffing around town. While at work she has also learned that the zombie movie "High School Zombie Apocalypse!!" that has been filming in her hometown is having its premiere opening that night. So, when she gets back from lunch she finds that co-worker Nick has a free pass to the movie’s premiere, but because of circumstances Nick can't go, so he gives it to Angel. Dateless, this will leave Angel free to take her father, who has recently broken up with his girlfriend, to the premiere. And there she meets a hot guy who gives her hot pants. Trust me, this will be important later in the novel. The day continues to be a busy, busy day, as before she goes to the movie she has chores to do at Dr. Nikas' lab. One of which is to check up on the damaged Philip, a man whom she was forced to turn into a zombie in the previous novel. Another one of her chores is to take care of the head of Kang, who was beheaded several novels ago, and for whom they are growing a new body for, and for whom the regeneration is coming along very well indeed. Unfortunately, due to circumstances in the previous novel, she has developed a habit, and so while she is at Dr. Nikas’s lab she also lifts the last of the V12 drug. The drug V12 was developed to help Philip because his parasite was damaged in the last novel, and he needs the drug to survive, such as it is, but his the V12 drug has been upgraded to V13, leaving little of the now obsolete V12 behind. Unfortunately, since the drug was developed for Philips damaged parasite, the drug is having unexpected side-effects on Angel, including slowing down Angel's super-zombie powers (speed, healing, strength), and causing hallucinations; with the lamentable end result being that suddenly Angel finds herself reverting to the old junkie-based Angel that she was before she was before she was zombiefied. And because of this, her consumption of brains, without the benefits, is on the increase. And she finds that those at Dr. Nikas' lab know that she's been stealing this drug, and when she's confronted about it, it causes her to flee, both the lab and her friends. With all of this coming down on Angel, the poo really starts hitting the fan as Angel has to deal with her new addiction; track down the killers of a movie executive, who also might be an industrial double agent, and who Angel had the hots for; while Saberton's agents, who are the tribe's enemies, are tracking her down; finding herself afoul of a local survivalist and prepper bunch which includes her ex-boyfriend; that she is being searched for by her tribe because of her recent erratic behavior; and the fact that the tribe is preparing for a possible exodus, in total, for parts unknown. Whew! Stock up on your caffeine as all of this happens over a time period of a day or two, so the day's events will eventually leave her a bit frayed by the end of this novel. Still, despite, or because of, all of this, "White Trash Zombie Gone Wild" is definitely a novel for the fans. This is because there is little in the way of exposition as to why anything is happening, who the characters in this novel are, and why they are relating the way that they are to each other. So this is a poor novel to begin reading the Angel Crawford series with, as you will have had to read all of the previous novels to really understand what is happening, and why the characters are behaving the way that they are, and Diana Rowland does little at times to fill in the blanks. Still, as I've read the previous novels, and as a fan, I'm giving it a higher score than I would if I were a casual reader. The only other real problem is that Rowland will toss in a little too much irrelevant levity, both snark and slapstick, for my liking, giving the whole novel a veneer of being a little too frothy at times. On-the-other-hand this novel has another kicker piece of front cover artwork by Daniel Dos Santos. I mean, it doesn't really illustrate anything in the book, but Dos Santos makes the cover look like a beat-up VHS cover. Although why Angel has autopsy scars is beyond me. And once again I want to know who the model is, as from a totally sexist point of view, she's pretty hot. MillerI love, Love, LOVE these books. They are so fun and entertaining. The MC is awesome - Angel is wicked clever and even the supporting characters are fantastic. I get both the book and the audible book, which btw the narrator is fantastic! I'm not quite finished with this one yet about 88% into it but so far it has been very exciting. Lots of twist and turns - I'm still waiting to see who the real bad guys are. This adventure we have more hunts, movies, and more people learning that Zombies Are Among Us. We also have to learn control, play hide and seek from dogs, and deal with stupid!I can't wait until the next one.See all 37 customer reviews...
