Back then Silver Storm was a mass market paperback, and I was blown away by the chemistry between the hot and devilish Captain Andre Raveneau and sweet and innocent Devon Lindsay. The trend of romance authors during that period was bodice-ripping. The men were portrayed as rougher and often more harsh and stern. The bodice ripping days are behind us in romance novels, and I was eager to re-read this book and compare a popular story from the early 80's to romance novels in the present day. I had forgotten much of the story, and as I was reading along I came to the scene where Devon's dress was ripped down to her waist by the marauding British soldier. I thought to myself, "Here it comes." I expected the hero would be a bodice-ripper as well. But no, Andre is the kind of hero that makes women swoon, even by today's standards. He is drop-dead handsome, quick-thinking, and brave. The plot sets up the situation where there is a lot of arguing between Andre and Devon, for good reasons. She finds him very frustrating and she often believes the worst of him. But she is wrong, he is not a beast, and as the story goes along she learns his is also heroic, kind-hearted, and protective. As I was reading I found their arguing to be so amusing. Both characters are likable and both have good reasons for their position in the disagreements.Oh yes, the sparks do fly, and I was swept up in the tale. I couldn't put this book down and I read it entirely in one day, even though I had to stay up way past my bedtime to finish it. It was that good! I ate the story up like I was gobbling down bonbons. It didn't dull the story in the least that I had read this before. It was even better this time around, for I now have the years of experience of reading many historical romances and I know a good one when I come across it.I am putting this author is on my short list of the best romance authors. What fun I am going to have reading each and every one of Cynthia Wright's books!Five Big Fat Stars!136 of 144 people found the following review helpful.A Privateer Rogue and a Young Innocent: Superb Storytelling in this 18th Century RomanceBy ReganFirst in the Raveneau series, this wonderful story is set in the late 18th century, mostly in the waters off the coast of America in the time of the Revolutionary War when the French were allied with America in fighting off the British and the privateers were an important part of the young country's defenses.Young Devon Lindsey grew up in in New London, Connecticut and dreamed of adventures at sea borrowed from the stories of her sea captain father. She meets the famous French privateer, Captain Andre Raveneau, when she is only 12, and he mesmerizes her. At 17, he steals a kiss in a carriage. Though he quickly forgot it, she never did. A year later, the British attack New London and while the whole town is burning, Devon is saved by a lecherous sailor who steals her aboard Raveneau's ship, the Black Eagle. There she again encounters the famous captain. This time he steals more than a kiss. This is a superbly told, well-written complex tale. I can't do justice to it in a short review, but I can say it held me captive for 341 pages. The hero, who has a low opinion of women from his father's mistress, is a cad who seems to flit from one woman's bed to the next for the entire book. Devon is a guileless 18-year-old innocent who seems to have bad judgment for most of the book as she seeks adventure and is enthralled by the man of legend she cannot resist. How they come together and the twists and turns of the tale of the war raging around them is a great story. It was my first by Wright but I have since bought all in this series. For the lover of classic historical romance who is tired of the light fluff so frequently offered today, this is the book for you. Please note: I read the paperback (original) version; I understand the eBook has only minor changes. The Raveneau Series:SILVER STORMSURRENDER THE STARSSILVER SEA (originally released as BARBADOS)TEMPEST (to be released in 2012)If you like to read in time sequence, as I do, here are the intertwined Raveneau and Beauvisage series in chronological order:1780 - SILVER STORM1783 - CAROLINE1789 - TOUCH THE SUN1793 - SPRING FIRES1814 - SURRENDER THE STARS1814 - NATALYA1818 - SILVER SEA (originally BARBADOS)1903 - TEMPEST (to be published in 2012)2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A true and delightful classic in the genre.By Mb4paxJust the kind of book I was wanting to read and I was not disappointed. A true swashbuckling tale of a hunk of a privateer during the American Revolution and a fresh doe-eyed maid who finds him irresistible. Naturally, the course of true love challenges at every turn with war, evil-doers, sneaky mistresses and difficult maturity mixed in. Classic characters to the genre, detailed settings of parts of New England and the exacting ravages of war had me from page one. Fun to read this book first published in 1979 noticing how the genre has evolved over the years. I say this one stands as a classic with just enough sizzle and lots of personality. I now plan to read all the rest in the series of Rakes Rebels and luxuriate in "swashbuckleness!"See all 726 customer reviews...
